The Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships featured 15 nations, including 141 in the youth category for those born in 2003 and 2004 and 152 in the junior category for those born in 2005 and 2006.

They were held from August 17 to 31, and reflecting on how the championships panned out, Salameh expressed his gratitude to those national federations who sent representatives.

"We hoped that most of the national federations would attend the ASBC Asian Youth and Junior Boxing Championships but we had to understand the [COVID-19] situation and the Governmental decisions of their countries," he admitted.

"The ASBC supported many national federations to participate in these championships.

"We are so grateful to those nations which could send their teams and thanks for their efforts and participations in Dubai."

The youth championships included 12 women’s and 13 men’s events, while there were 13 weight divisions in each of the junior girls and junior boys championships.

Kazakhstan earned 19 golds at the combined championships to top the medal table, followed by Uzbekistan and India.

The event was held over 10 days in the Grand Ballroom of Dubai’s Le Meridien Hotel, centralising the championships in one venue to reduce transport.

Salameh explained the concept of the event.

"This was the first ever Asian Championship that mixed the junior and youth age groups for both genders, therefore we could host the event in four different categories," he said.

"The idea came due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the spread of the coronavirus and this situation - its consequences are very hard for almost all of the Asian countries."

Dubai had earlier hosted the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in May this year.
