Ando stormed back from two games down to beat another South Korean in Shin Yubin 9-11, 6-1, 11-7, 11-4, 11-2.

Japan almost had a third player in the women’s singles quarter-final, only for Miyu Nagasaki to let slip a two-game lead.

India’s Archana Girish Kamath showed her grit and determination to upset Nagasaki with a 11-13, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-8 success.

Kamath will next face Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kem, who defeated compatriot Lee Ho Ching 16-14, 10-12, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8.

Bruna Takahashi of Brazil and Ukraine’s Margaryta Pesotska will face each other in the last eight after they both won in straight games.

Takahashi downed India’s Sreeja Akula 11-7, 11-4, 12-10 and Pesotska downed Indonesia’s Xiaoxin Yang 14-12, 11-6, 11-6.

There was also a straight game victory for Thailand’s Suthasini Sawettabut who beat Hong Kong’s NG Wing Nam 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

Sawettabut will meet South Korea’s Jeon Jihee who overcame Japan’s Saki Shibata 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8.

In the men’s singles competition, fourth seed Liam Pitchford of England defeated Hong Kong’s Ho Kwan Kit 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8 in the round of 16.

Pitchford will hope to continue his run as he tackles Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting, who edged out Austria’s Robert Gardos 11-9. 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8.

France’s Simon Gauzy swept aside Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson with a 11-6, 11-2, 11-8 victory to set up a meeting with Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, who came from a game down to defeat South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon.

There were also last-16 victories for Croatia’s Andrey Gacina, Slovenia’s Darko Jorgic, Finland’s Benedek Olah and South Korea’s Lee Sangsu.
