Defending champions Argentina edged through to the semi-finals of the FIFA Futsal World Cup after beating the Russian Football Union (RFU) on penalties at the Kaunas Arena in Lithuania.

Argentina took the lead in the second period courtesy of a free-kick from Leandro Cuzzolino.

With five minutes remaining in normal time Artem Antoshkin levelled for the RFU to send the contest into extra time.

There was no breakthrough in extra-time meaning the contest was decided from the spot.

After both teams missed two penalties in the shoot-out, Pablo Taborda scored to put Argentina 5-4 in front, and when Romulo had his penalty saved by Nicolas Sarmiento, the holders were able to celebrate progress.

Argentina will face South American rivals Brazil in the semi-final, after Rodrigo’s free-kick was enough to give five-time winners Brazil a 1-0 victory over Morocco at the Vilnius Arena.

Portugal came from behind in an all European quarter-final to defeat double world champions Spain 4-2 after extra time at the Vilnius Arena.

Two goals in two minutes early in the second period from Adolfo Fernandez and Adri Martinez gave Spain the advantage.

Goals from Andre and Zicky brought Portugal level, forcing the contest into extra time.

Portugal’s momentum continued into the additional period, and they were given a helping hand to retake the lead when Jose Raya scored an own goal.

With two minutes remaining in the second period of extra time Pany netted to seal victory for Portugal.

Portugal will face Kazakhstan in the last four, after they also came from behind to defeat Iran 3-2 at the Kaunas Arena.

Iran took a 2-0 lead in the first half courtesy of goals from Moslem Oladghobad and Ahmad Esmaeilpour.

An own goal from Alireza Samimi started the Kazakhstan comeback before Arnold Knaub levelled on the half-hour mark.

In the last minute of regular time Kazakhstan claimed victory courtesy of a goal from Taynan.

The semi-final matches are due to be played at the Kaunas Arena on September 29 and 30.
