Canadian Brittany Schlater emerged victorious from an intense tussle with Sweden’s Emelie Leach and France’s Amelie Mierger to secure the women’s over-84 kilogram crown at the Powerlifting Federation World Open Classic Championships in Halmstad in Sweden.

The three-way battle for the title went down to the last lift with Schlater managing to register 250kg in deadlift.

Both Leach and Schlater finished on 607.5kg overall, but the latter, who also lifted 230kg in squat and 127.5kg in bench press, secured top spot based on body weight.

Leach had to settle for silver after 227.5kg in squat, 135kg in bench press and 245kg in deadlift.

France’s Amelie Mierger was leading after a squat of 232.5kg and bench press of 145kg but a deadlift of 222.5kg saw her slip to third with a total of 600kg.

Schlater’s gold was the first of two medals for Canada on the final day of the tournament in the Swedish city as Erik Willis came second in the men’s over-120kg division.

Willis and Ukraine’s Dmvtro Vovk both notched 952.5kg but the Canadian was awarded silver based on body weight.

However, neither could get near Jesus Olivares who completed an impressive week for the Virgin Islands with another gold.

Olivares came out on top with 1045kg after producing a squat of 427.5kg, bench press of 252.5kg and deadlift of 365kg.

It was the Virgin Islands’ fifth gold medal after the success of Amanda Lawrence, Russel Orhii, Jonathan Cayco and Chandler Babb.
