Hosts and defending champions South Africa are through to the semi-finals of the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women's Championship in Port Elizabeth after topping Group A.

South Africa has won seven of the eight editions of the competition, and had won all of its three group matches en route to victory in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

It is the only top 100 nation in the FIFA women's world rankings featuring at this tournament, positioned 55th, but did drop points in their second match this time around, drawing 0-0 to Angola.

However, a 2-1 victory over Malawi in their opener and 3-1 win against Mozambique in their final group game saw them safely through to the semi-finals.

Malawi had six different goalscorers on target in their group campaign as they finished second, coming from 2-0 behind to defeat Mozambique 3-2 and seeing off the challenge of Angola 2-0.

They progressed to the last four as the best runner-up from the group stage.

Tanzania reached the semi-finals with a 100 per cent record in Group B, overcoming Zimbabwe 3-0, the 2020 finalists Botswana 2-0 and South Sudan 3-0.

Stumai Athuman's hat-trick in the last outing for Tanzania has her joint-top of the goalscoring standings.

Zimbabwe was the second highest ranked nation featuring at 119th, but faced an early elimination from the COSAFA Women's Championship despite 2-1 and 3-0 wins against South Sudan and Botswana respectively.

Zambia made sure of their progression from Group C inside two matches after a 5-0 rout against Eswatini, aided by Ochumba Lubandji's hat-trick, and a comfortable 3-0 victory against Namibia.

Uganda knew that despite their 5-1 thrashing of Eswatini in their last match, they had to beat Zambia in their final match to progress having been held to a goalless draw by Namibia in their opener.

However, Zambia triumphed 1-0 to also progress with their winning record intact.

The semi-finals, scheduled for Thursday (October 7) see Tanzania against Namibia and hosts South Africa against Malawi in a repeat of the Group A contest.

The third place playoff and final are to be held on Sunday (October 9).
