The 2021-2022 International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating continues this week in Vancouver with the Skate Canada International as three-time and reining ISU World Champion Nathan Chen fronts a strong field.

The American comes straight from Las Vegas, where he took the bronze medal at Skate America - the first ISU Grand Prix of the season - with an overall score of 269.37 as he looks to replicate the result to secure a place at the ISU Grand Prix final.

Chen was beaten only by compatriot Vincent Zhou and Japan's Shoma Uno in Nevada with scores of 295.56 and 270.68, respectively.

Canada's Keegan Messing is touted as a dark horse after he produced an impressive performance at the Finlandia Trophy earlier in the month but narrowly missed out on the podium.

The women's event is set to be an exciting battle between upcoming star Kamila Valieva of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FSR), who was crowned the 2020 ISU World Junior Champion, and her countrywoman Elizaveta Tuktamysheva.

Tuktamysheva won the 2018 edition and was also the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships silver medallist in Stockholm.

Alena Kostornaia, also of the FSR, is similarly tipped for success after winning the 2020 European Championships.

Japan's 2018 world silver medallist Wakaba Higuchi and 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy winner Alysia Liu stand the best chance of preventing the FSR from securing a clean sweep.

In the pairs, China's two-time ISU World Champions Wenjing Sui Cong Han, two-time ISU Four Continents medallists Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro of Canada and 2020 ISU European bronze medallists Daria Pavliuchenko and Denis Khodykin of the FSR will face off as favourites for the gold medal.

Canadian pair Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier headline the ice dance event as 2021 ISU World Championships bronze medallists.

Competition will come from 2019 European Championships bronze medallists Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy.

A total of 60 competitors representing 11 ISU members are entered for the event.

The event begins tomorrow with the pairs, men's and women's short programs and rhythm dance competitions, and will run until October 31.
