The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) is set to appoint a new Chef de Mission for Team Fiji for the forthcoming season.

Current Chef de Mission Patrick Bower did not apply for the role for the 2022 season, which is set to centre around the Pacific Mini Games in the Northern Mariana Islands in June and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July and August.

"There will be a new Chef de Mission and we’re in the process of finalising the appointment," said FASANOC chief executive Lorraine Mar, as reported by the Fiji Times.

"We’re running the interviews at the moment and it should be public knowledge by next week, hopefully."

Mar added there had been an "immense response" for the position, which is held on a voluntary basis.

"The Executive Committee will make a final decision on the recommendations of the interviewing panellists and give the thumbs up to the best available person, who will provide leadership and direction before, during and after the Games for Team Fiji contingent," she said.

"They’ll also decide on whether the appointee will be tasked to take Team Fiji to both the major events we will be participating in next year."

The FASANOC says it envisages appointing a male to the Chef de Mission post.

The 2022 Pacific Mini Games are scheduled to take place at the Oleai Sports Complex in the Northern Mariana Islands from June 17 to 25, while the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are due to take place from July 28 to August 8.
