Hosts Turkey, Paralympic women’s gold medallists and defending champions at the International Blind Sports Federation Goalball European A Championships, suffered a shock defeat to Britain in their Pool C match.

The home team, who earned a 2-1 yesterday over the other title favourites, world champions Russia, were upset 3-2 at the Yaşar Doğu Sport Hall in Samsun by a dogged British team.

Having come through the opening two days of competition with a 100 per cent record, the Tokyo 2020 champions received a wake-up call as Antonia Bunyan scored the winning goal for Britain.

Elsewhere in today’s women’s pool matches, Russia recovered their fortunes as they beat Finland 10-0, Israel earned a 6-0 win over Germany and Ukraine defeated Greece 9-4.

It was a bad day for the home teams, as the Turkish men went down 6-5 to the defending champions, Germany.

In other men’s pool matches, Finland beat Greece 13-7 and Belgium earned an 11-1 win over Spain.

Pool play continues in Samsun until Tuesday (November 9) ahead of the quarter-finals on November 10.

Semi-finals and placement games for fifth to eighth place will happen on November 11, with medal matches being held the following day.
