Slovenia’s Monika Bartol triumphed in the women’s junior event on the final day of the World Triathlon Duathlon Championships in Avilés.

Bartol was among 10 athletes starting the women’s event in Spain and formed part of a lead group on the opening run section of the event.

She reached the first transition level with Poland’s Maja Wąsik and Italy’s Elenora Demarchi, with the trio finishing the 5.1-kilometre run in 18min 53sec.

Bartol was able to distance her rivals on the 20km bike section, where she achieved a time of 29:02.

The Slovenian entered the final transition with a 56-second cushion over Wasik.

Her advantage was reduced in the second run of the event, but Bartol sealed a comfortable victory in a time of 58.33.


Wasik finished 50 seconds down as the runner-up.

The podium places were completed by Demarchi, who finished the competition in 59:59.

Britain’s Ben Cumberland earned victory in the men’s competition, after a dominant second run of the competition.

Cumberland had been in a closely contested race with Belgium duo Wout Ghielens and Simon Martin.

The British athlete completed the final run section of the event in 7:56, nearly 20 seconds faster than the Belgian pair.

Cumberland crossed the line in a winning time of 50:23.

Ghielens settled for second place in 50:35, with Martin ending a further seven seconds down in third.
