Japan's men beat defending champions South Korea on their way to recording two victories at the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships in Almaty.

The Japanese rink outclassed their South Korean rivals in an 8-2 win in their opening match of the day at Almaty Arena.

Japan, ranked sixth in the world, then beat Chinese Taipei 11-4 to continue their 100 per cent start to the tournament.

Chinese Taipei had edged out Hong Kong 9-6 in the morning session.

Hong Kong recovered when they came back in the evening as they despatched Saudi Arabia 8-3.

In the women's event, Japan also maintained their strong opening to the competition as they overcame Olympic silver medallists South Korea.

A 9-5 win gave the Japanese side their third straight success of the event and ensured they remain the team to beat.

Kazakhstan picked up their first victory by defeating Hong Kong 11-6 in the afternoon session.

The hosts had begun with losses to South Korea and Japan.

Two women's teams and one men's side will earn their nation's spot at the World Championship at the event in Almaty, scheduled to conclude on Saturday (November 13).
