PUBG Mobile has begun development of a new version of its popular game to ensure a fair qualifying system for when it makes its debut at the Asian Games in Hangzhou next year.

It is one of eight games selected for the Games, where esports is due to make its debut as a medal sport.

PUBG Mobile, a game in which players are parachuted onto a remote island to fight each other to remain the last survivors. is currently not available to play in China.

Instead, a localised version of the game complying with strict regulatory laws called "Peacekeeper Elite" - also known as Game for Peace - is available in the country.

The game is also not available in India after being banned in September 2020 for data privacy concerns.

A separate version of the game called "Battlegrounds Mobile India" was later released.

It is identical to the original game.

A new version of PUBG Mobile for the Asian Games will allow countries to use a common game to conduct qualifiers and compete for the gold medal at Hangzhou, due to take place between September 10 and 25 next year.

Other titles include EA Sports FIFA, League of Legends and Street Fighter V.

They are set to be joined by Arena of Valor Asian Games, Dota 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2 and Hearthstone.

It has accumulated more than a billion downloads on Google Play and Apple App Store and has grossed $6.2 billion (£4.6 billion/€5.4 billion).

"It's an honour for PUBG MOBILE to be included in the 2022 Asian Games," James Yang, director of global esports at Tencent Games, said.

"We're incredibly lucky to have a number of extremely talented players from several countries including Malaysia and can't wait to see them compete as part of such a prestigious event.

"Fans of the game can look forward to exciting competition between the region's best PUBG Mobile players as they're celebrated alongside the best athletes in Asia."

Tencent also plan to make a separate version of Arena of Valor for the Asian Games.

"I'm glad that PUBG Mobile is selected as the official medal event at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, which will be an opportunity for people from all over Asia to come together as one," PUBG Mobile strategic marketing development at Krafton Minu Lee said.

"I hope that fans and players will be able to unite through a new version on PUBG Mobile, which we developed with PUBG IP specifically for the Asian Games."

The Olympic Council of Asia has selected the Hong Kong-based Asian Electronic Sports Federation (AESF) to oversee esports in the Asian Games.

The AESF will be responsible for qualifiers, management and operations.
