Rising cross-country star Linn Svahn will miss the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games due to a shoulder injury.

The 21-year-old Swede told Expressen that the injury - sustained in a fall in February - will keep her out of the Games 12 months later, as it has required a second operation after Svahn's shoulder did not heal correctly.

Svahn said the damage to her shoulder is "much worse than we had predicted" and will require too long a period of rehabilitation to be healed in time for the Olympics.

"It has taken me a while to come to terms with the situation as it is," Svahn told Expressen.

"That I am now in a process where it is about simply being whole again - and not getting in good shape for the season."

Svahn is an 11-time World Cup winner - with nine of those solo triumphs - and topped the overall sprint standings after the 2019-2020 season.

The Swede was a beaten semi-finalist at this year's Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, an event won by compatriot Jonna Sundling.

Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist will now be expected to lead Sweden's sprint charge at Beijing 2022, with Svahn ruled out.

The Games would have represented Svahn's first Olympic appearance.
