Axelsen had appeared on course for a quarter-final place in the men’s singles event after winning the opening game 21-14 against Prannoy at the Bali International Convention Center.

Prannoy narrowly trailed second seed Axelsen in the second game, but three consecutive points saw him win 21-19 to force a decider.

The two players were evenly matched with the scores locked at 14-all, before Prannoy produced a late surge to secure a 14-21, 21-19, 21-16 victory.

Prannoy will feature in an all-Indian match against Srikanth Kidambi in the last eight, after his compatriot also came from a game down to beat Indonesia’s sixth-seeded Jonathan Christie 13-21, 21-18, 21-15.

The winners of their match will face either Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in the semi-finals.

Vitidsarn beat Indonesia’s Shesar Hiren Rhustavito 21-14, 21-9 today, while third seed Antonsen recorded a 21-17, 21-16 win over fellow Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghus.

Top seed Kenta Momota of Japan was a 21-13, 21-19 winner against India’s Lakshya Sen, with the result keeping his hopes of a first World Tour title of the season alive.

Momota now faces Denmark’s Rasmus Genke, who was a 21-15, 21-6 victor over France’s Toma Junior Popov.

Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-chen and Hong Kong’s Ng Ka-Long will contest the last quarter-final after the pair earned straight-game wins over Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew and Japan’s Koki Watanabe respectively.

Meanwhile, the top seeds in the women’s singles competition largely enjoyed a strong day, although Rachankok Intanon bowed out.

The second seed was beaten 18-21, 21-12, 21-17 by Phittayaporn Chaiwan in an all-Thai contest.

Chaiwan meets Yeo Jin Min of Singapore in the quarter-finals, following her 21-19, 14-21, 21-14 win over Saena Kawakami of Japan.

Top seed Akane Yamaguchi won the opening game of her match against Kim Ga-eun, only for the South Korean to respond by winning the second impressively.

Yamaguchi, who recently won the Denmark and French Open titles, regained the momentum to take the decider.

The Japanese star earned a 21-17, 14-21, 21-16 victory.

She now faces Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong, who was a 21-13, 21-12 winner against Japan’s Aya Ohori.

Reigning world champion Pusarla V. Sindhu of India recovered from losing the first game to beat Spain’s Clara Azurmendi 17-21, 21-7, 21-12.

The third seed now plays Turkey’s Neslihan Yigit, following her 21-18, 21-13 success against Ukraine’s Marija Ulitina.

South Korea’s An Se-young dispatched Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya 21-11, 21-12 to reach the last eight.

The fourth seed will play Japan’s Sayaka Takanashi in the quarter-finals, after her 21-18, 21-12 win over Germany’s Yvonne Li.
