President Neven Ilic will oversee the Panam Sports General Assembly ©Panam Sports

Panam Sports is hosting its General Assembly at the Hotel InterContinental in Cali, which begins tomorrow and precedes the first-ever Junior Pan American Games here in the Colombian city.

The two-day General Assembly will conclude on Wednesday (November 24), the day before the Cali 2021 Opening Ceremony.

All 41 countries and territories affiliated with Panam Sports have committed to sending a team to Cali 2021, so all are also expected to take part in the General Assembly.

It is not elective as Chilean official Neven Ilic was unanimously re-elected as Panam Sports President during last year's remote gathering.

Ilic, an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, is set to welcome the participants following the opening of the event before IOC President Thomas Bach delivers his remarks.

The 2020 gathering took place online because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the health crisis was also blamed for a two-and-a-half-month delay to the Junior Pan American Games.

Cali 2021 is being billed as a key event in the lead-up to the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and Paris 2024 Olympics, allowing up-and-coming athletes a platform they would not have had in years gone by.

An update on the progress of Santiago 2023 - due to be Chile's first hosting of the Pan American Games is one of  the main items on the General Assembly's agenda.

The final report of the General Assembly will be on the 20th Pan American Games, Barranquilla 2027.

Barranquilla in Colombia was awarded the hosting rights in August and was the only city to bid.

The General Assembly was preceded by a Panam Sports Executive Committee meeting, where discussions were centred around how the governing body and its members were approaching Cali 2021, preparations for Santiago 2023 and a look back on a tumultuous year.
