Gushue ensured a return to the Games with a 4-3 victory over Brad Jacobs, ending a 16-year absence.

His team of Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker were victorious in a defensive battle with Jacobs' rink also consisting of Marc Kennedy, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden.

Gushue's double in the ninth end was pivotal, ending a run of single-stone ends.

Jacobs had the chance to score two to keep him in the contest, but he overthrew his final stone and rolled out to give Gushue the win.

"We needed to be near-perfect today in order to win this game and we weren't," said Jacobs afterwards, according to Sports Net.

Gushue and Nichols were the gold medallists from the Turin 2006 tournament, but have failed to make the Games since after Kevin Martin represented Canada in 2010, Jacobs in 2014 and Kevin Koe in 2018.

Koe ended a run of medal wins for Canada at Pyeongchang 2018, with the nation winning two silvers and three golds since the sport's reintroduction to the Games at Nagano 1998.

Gushue, Martin and Jacobs all won gold.

Jones returns to the Games too after winning the gold at Sochi 2014, with team-mates Kaitlyn Lawes and Dawn McEwan, as well as Jocelyn Peterman who replaces Jill Officer from that rink.

They nearly blew the chance of making their second Games in the 10th end after Jones missed an open takeout to win with two stones, but instead missed to only take a single, stunning her opponent Tracy Fleury, who did not expect an extra end with the easy shot.

Fleury, however, missed on her final throw after Jones put up a guard in the extra end, allowing the veteran to steal for one and win 6-5.

"We thought we had lost in the 10th for sure," said Fleury.

"I think Jen makes that 99 per cent of the time, that shot. 

"So we felt lucky to be able to go to an extra and we really wanted to pull it off there.

"But I didn't make my last two shots."

Canada has won two women's and three men's Olympic titles, but Pyeongchang 2018 was a devastating disappointing for the curling nation, with neither the men's or women's teams making the medals.

Lawes and partner John Morris did win the inaugural mixed doubles gold, meaning Canada did claim one medal.
