Olympic relay gold medallist Sebastian Samuelsson of Sweden claimed his second consecutive sprint victory at the International Biathlon Union World Cup on home soil in Östersund.

Samuelsson secured back-to-back wins following his triumph in the sprint race at the same venue last weekend after completing the 10 kilometres course in 22min 58.7sec.

The Swede, Olympic silver medallist in the pursuit at Pyeongchang 2018, recovered from missing a single shot in the prone stage to finish 18 seconds clear of Emilien Jacquelin of France in second position.

Jacquelin's team mate Quentin Fillon Maillet, also with a single penalty, took third, 21.5sec adrift of the victorious Swede.

"I am not sure [how I won with one mistake]," Samuelsson said.

"I am surprised that I could win a race with one mistake here.

"I am at loss for words; it is amazing.

"I am very happy and proud of my performance.

"I knew that one mistake is not optimal in a sprint, so I had to do a good standing shooting I am happy I did it with I think some pressure.

"Then I think my final loop was something very special."

Victory for Samuelsson sent him into the early lead on the overall World Cup standings as he has 121 points, one clear of three-time defending champion Johannes Thingnes Bø of Norway in second.

Austria's Lisa Theresa Hauser shot clean on her way to winning the women's 7.5km sprint race.

Hauser, the world mass start champion, took the lead after the standing stage and went on to record a commanding triumph in 19:30.2.

Elvira Öberg of Sweden did enough for second, 12.5 behind Hauser, while third place went to Belarusian Hanna Sola, who was 14.4 back.

Like Samuelsson, Hauser is now the leader in the race for the overall title.

The Austrian has 134 points, five ahead of Belarusian Dzinara Alimbekava.

The World Cup in the Swedish resort continues on Saturday (December 4) following a rest day tomorrow.
