Mariia Bocharova will have the opportunity to defend her International Volleyball Federation's Under-19 Beach Volleyball World Championships title, which begins tomorrow at Bangtao Beach in Phuket.

The Russian triumphed alongside Maria Voronina at the 2018 edition of the Under-19 Beach Volleyball World Championships in the Chinese city of Nanjing.

Bocharova, who also won gold at the Youth Olympic Games, will compete with Elizaveta Gubina in Thailand - one of 36 duos competing in the women's event.

A total of 25 of the entrants have automatically qualified for the main draw, while 11 pairs will enter tomorrow's qualification tournament for the final seven berths.

In the men's competition, 28 duos are already assured of their places in the main draw, with four of the eight pairs in tomorrow's qualification tournament to complete the line-up.

At the main stage of both competitions, the 32 teams will be divided into eight round-robin pools of four.

The winners of each pool will advance to the round of 16, while the pairs placed second and third will enter the round of 24 for the chance to join them.

A knockout phase of the World Championships will then decide the winners, with the event due to conclude on Saturday (December 11).

Thirty-one countries will be represented at the Championships.

Brazil have historically been the most successful nation across the previous 15 editions, winning the women's title four times and the men's crown three times.

Poland have won a record four gold medals in the men's event, while Germany have won three of both competitions.

This year's World Championships were due to be held in 2020 but were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scheduled dates in September 2021 were also pushed back to this month.
