Commonwealth Games medallist James Heatly has been named as the first diver selected for Scotland at Birmingham 2022 after his ninth-place finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Gold Coast 2018 bronze medal winner - Scotland's first Commonwealth Games diving medal in 60 years - is set to compete in the three metres springboard event in the British city after being the seventh Scot to make the national team for the Games.

Scotland's aquatics squad for the Games is expected to be made up of 22 athletes.

"To be preselected is just amazing and I can’t actually believe that this will be my third Games," said Heatly.

"It’s nice to have that box ticked, it’s like a weight has lifted off my shoulders and I can relax and just let the other performances happen.

"I was lucky enough to do Glasgow 2014 where the diving was in Edinburgh, so that was a home, home Games.

"My mum is from Birmingham, so I’m half Brummie.

"It will be nice to get my mum’s side of the family involved and able to come and watch, so I’m really excited that it’s in Birmingham.

"In the lead into Tokyo, it was all about getting to the various championships – Commonwealths, Europeans, Worlds and Olympics.

"Now that I’ve competed at them all, it’s time to look at upgrading some of those medals and results."

At the 2015 European Games in Baku, the 24-year-old won gold, silver and bronze in the 3m springboard, 3m synchro and 1m springboard events, respectively.

He will be looking to recreate the success of his grandfather, Sir Peter Heatly.

Sir Peter won five medals at what was then known as the British Empire Games, including three consecutive golds at Auckland 1950, Vancouver 1954 and Cardiff 1958.

Heatly joins the six athletics representatives on Scotland's delegation for the Games.

Tokyo 2020 1500m silver medallist Laura Muir, Tokyo 2020 1500m bronze medallist Josh Kerr, 2018 Commonwealth Games 1500m bronze winner Jake Wightman, European Championships 5000m silver medallist Eilish McColgan and long-distance runners Andrew Butchart and Jemma Reekie have also been selected.
