Um Cheon-ho successfully defended his title at the International Skating Union's Four Continents Speed Skating Championships in Calgary as South Korean athletes won both of the mass start events.

In the men's competition at the Olympic Oval, Um recorded what in the end was a comfortable victory over Canada's Hayden Mayeur and the United States' Zach Stoppelmoor, who finished second and third in that order.

Um's compatriot Park Chae-won staged a late attack to win the women's race, with American pair Jamie Jurak and Dessie Weigel forced to settle for silver and bronze.

Jurak has now won three medals at the Four Continents Speed Skating Championships, although her time of 2min 1.89sec was only enough for third in the women's 1,500m.

That event was won by Canadian home favourite Kali Christ, who secured her first international title in 1:57.67, while American Sarah Warren was second with a 2:00.41 effort.

Kazakhstan's Nadezhda Morozova was disqualified after a second false start, while there was also disappointment for the favourite in the men's 1,500m as the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic bronze medallist Kim Min-seok of South Korea secured only third place with his time of 1:46.47.

Dmitry Morozov of Kazakhstan triumphed in 1:45.32, beating Canada's 10,000m Olympic champion Ted-Jan Bloemen by 0.33 seconds.

Tomorrow is set to be the final day of the event, with competition held in the men's and women's 1,000m and team pursuit.
