Junhwan Cha of South Korea became the first male skater from his country to win a title at the Four Continents Figure Skating Championships in Estonia, when he claimed the men’s individual crown.

Cha, who posted a personal best score to lead after the short programme on Friday (January 21), achieved a season’s best score in the men’s free skate despite a shaky start to his routine which saw him underrotate on a quadruple toeloop.

Cha went on to land a quadruple Salchow, triple Lutz-triple loop, triple Axel and three more triples on his way to scoring 174.26 in the free skate, giving him a total of 273.22 points.

The silver medal went to Japan’s Kazuki Tomono, who made his first appearance on an ISU Championship podium after setting a personal best score in the free skate of 171.89.

His routine featured a quadruple toeloop-double toeloop and quadruple Salchow, but missed the second quad toe.

Tomono finished with a total of 268.99, and was joined on the podium by fellow Japanese skater Kao Miura, who finished in the bronze medal position.

Miura produced a personal best score of 162.70 during a routine featuring a quad Salchow-double toe, quad toe and two triple Axels.

Despite stumbling on a solo quad Salchow, Miura finished with a total score of 251.07 points.

Japan’s Sena Miyake finished fourth overall on 240.02 points, while Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan finished fifth overall with 234.67, after moving up the standings from eighth following the short programme.

Figure skating competition at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is scheduled to take place between February 4 and 20.
