The 19th edition of the Championships were due to take place from May 13 to 29 2022, but after being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, are now set to be held from July 14 to 30 2023.

This means that the 20^th edition of the Championships are also being delayed, until 2024.

FINA President Husain Al-Musallam said: "Given the current pandemic situation and the measures currently in place in Japan, FINA and key stakeholders of the Fukuoka 2022 Organising Committee have agreed to reschedule the 19th FINA World Championships to July 14 to 30 2023.

"The 20th FINA World Championships in Doha, Qatar, will now take place in January 2024. These decisions have been taken in the best interests of everyone involved.

"FINA will continue to prioritise the welfare of competition participants and take decisions as early as possible given the circumstances, in order to provide a measure of certainty to aquatics athletes and those who support them."

The 19^th World Aquatics Championships were originally due to take place in July 2021 but were then delayed to avoid a clash with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

FINA said the organisation is "in constant dialogue with athletes and coaches regarding the upcoming international aquatics competition calendar, with the goal of minimising the impact on athlete preparation and performance, while acknowledging the current health impacts of the Omicron COVID-19 variant."

Revised dates for FINA’s General Congress, Technical Congress and the 19^th FINA World Masters Championships 2022 are set to be announced in due course.

With the 20^th World Aquatics Championships in Doha being pushed back to 2024, these are set to be the first to be staged in the same year as a Summer Olympic Games, with Paris 2024 due to be held from July 26 to August 11.
