Taekwondo Canada has launched a new concussion-prevention initiative in a bid to keep the country's athletes safe.

The scheme has been set up alongside Parachute, Canada's national charity dedicated to preventing serious and fatal injuries.

Educational toolkits will be provided for athletes, coaches, referees and parents on the dangers of concussion, and how to prevent, recognise and manage potential injuries during competitions or training.

"Today's announcement with Parachute shows a commitment to the safety of athletes and all involved in the sport of taekwondo in Canada," said Taekwondo Canada executive director Dave Harris.

"We are extremely proud to be working with Parachute in providing educational resources that will ensure the education and safety of all.

"This initiative can now be shared with the provincial and territorial sport organisations as well as club owners in Canada, ensuring that all are provided with the resources to understand the dangers of concussions."

World-renowned experts are said to be part of Parachute's Concussion Advisory Committee, with the initiative's resources including the most up-to-date guidelines.

"When Parachute published the first Canadian Guideline on Concussion in Sport and the related resources, our goal was to support sport organisations such as Taekwondo Canada to use the best evidence available to inform their concussion policies and protocols," said Pamela Fuselli, Parachute's President and chief executive.

"The use of best practices increases the safety of athletes and integrates concussion prevention and management into the day-to-day activities of coaches and athletes."
