The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has revealed plans to create a new women's competition from August 2024 with the prize of a guaranteed place at the Qualification Tournament for the World Cup or the Olympic Games.

This competition would be held every two years, reflecting the four-year cycle of women's basketball's flagship international competitions.

A total of 16 teams - the four best ranked teams from each of FIBA's four regions who failed to qualify for the World Cup or the Olympic Games - are to compete in the pre-qualifying tournament.

A berth at the next Qualification Tournament is on offer for the winner.

FIBA said that this follows a recommendation from the Competitions Commission, which was accepted by the Executive Committee.

It is aimed at offering "a sufficient number of competitive games to emerging National Federations".

More details are expected following a meeting of FIBA's Central Board next month.

The line-up for Qualification Tournaments for this year's Women's Basketball World Cup was determined by teams' performances at their continental championships, with six teams taking part from Europe, four from the Americas and Asia, and two from Africa.

The 16 teams were then divided into groups of four, with teams needing to finish in the top three to join hosts Australia and Olympic champions the United States at the World Cup.

Australia is set to stage the Women's Basketball World Cup from September 22 to October 1, with the US the defending champions from the 2018 edition.

The US once again retained their Olympic title at Tokyo 2020, with Paris due to hold the next Games in 2024.
