Organisers of this year's World Lacrosse Men's Under-21 World Championship in Limerick are gearing up preparations for the tournament in August, with plans unveiled for a World Festival tournament to be held in parallel.

The event was initially planned as an Under-19 Championship in 2020, but a series of COVID-19 related postponements have pushed it back to August 10 to 20 this year.

National Federation Ireland Lacrosse, which is collaborating with World Lacrosse on the organisation of the Championship, intends to stage a World Festival tournament for up to 64 club teams across eight categories, divided by age and gender.

An interactive "FanFest area" is also planned for supporters to participate in games of lacrosse and learn about the sport, while sponsorship packages at presenting, gold, silver and bronze levels are also available.

Ireland Lacrosse chief executive Michael Kennedy, the event director for the Championship, described the tournament as "an incredibly exciting opportunity for Ireland".

Daniel Butler, the Mayor of the City and Council of Limerick, is hopeful that it will help to exhibit the city on a global stage.

"Limerick has embraced the opportunity to host the 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championships," Butler said.

"It offers a unique occasion to showcase all that Limerick has to offer as a place to live, work and visit.

"Hosting large, international sports events produces millions in economic impact for Limerick and underscores the importance of attracting events such as the Men’s U21 Lacrosse World Championship, the Ryder Cup and others here in the future.

"I encourage local people and businesses to get behind this event and actively support the 2022 World Championship and demonstrate our world-famous hospitality."

Fáilte Ireland serves as Ireland's National Tourism Development Authority, and its Wild Atlantic Way manager Margaret Jenkins believes the Championship will provide a significant boost to the local economy.

"The announcement that the Men’s U21 Lacrosse World Championship is being hosted in Limerick is a massive boost for the city and county," Jenkins commented.

"Sports event participants tend to stay on average five to seven nights and they often travel with their families at some stage of the trip.

"This major sporting event will bring thousands of additional visitors to Limerick providing a huge benefit to the local economy, while the international broadcast will promote Limerick, recently designated a Wild Atlantic Way Gateway City, to visitors around the world.

"Fáilte Ireland will continue to work with the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau to build on the success of this event and attract other major sporting events to Limerick in the future."

Matches at the Championship are set to be staged at the University of Limerick,

A total of 23 teams are expected to compete for the title.

Ireland has never previously held a World Lacrosse Championship event.
