The Costa Rica National Olympic Committee (NOC) has resumed the safe sport project this year in a bid to reject any form of violence.

This is to ensure the sports community is physically and psychologically supported and comes after the International Olympic Committee made the recommendation in its Olympic Agenda 2020+5.

The agenda is designed to tackle various problems, such as strengthening safe sport and the protection of clean athletes, promoting virtual events and committing to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.

As a part of the project, the NOC has been granted greater International Olympic Solidarity funds to support and promote sporting values in a safe environment.

Education, policies, and procedures will be at the heart of the programme, which aims to promote protection against different forms of non-accidental violence, including psychological violence, physical violence, negligence, and sexual violence.

The project will train individuals, provide a safe environment for complaints to be lodged and protect athletes, leaders, officials, coaches, and the general sporting community from such actions.

Psychologist Wendy Zúñiga and methodologist Lucía Marín will monitor the initiative.

"The project is part of the approaches we make to Olympic Solidarity and where we are leaders in defence of sport free from any form of discrimination, harassment and violence," Alexánder Zamora, President of the National Olympic Committee, said.

"For this reason, we seek to ensure the development of a sports environment in equal conditions."
