Nine countries are set to line-up for the first ever edition of the EuroLax Sixes Cup, a European based six-a-side lacrosse event due to begin in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal tomorrow.

Hosts Portugal, England, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Ukraine, Germany, Switzerland and Britain are due to take part in the three-day competition in the Algarve region, which is scheduled to conclude on Sunday (February 27).

Group stage matches are due to take place tomorrow, followed by the conclusion of the group stage and playoffs on Saturday (February 26) and placement games and finals on February 27.

Action is set to take place at the Vila Real de Santo Antonio Sports Complex, a high-performance sports centre which has previously hosted pre-Olympic training camps for the Portuguese team.

Speaking about the event Portugal Lacrosse's general manager Pedro Machado said: "The EuroLax Sixes Cup will truly be a showcase of our sport, with athletes representing 15 countries coming together for an incredible weekend of competition and a common goal of growing the game.

"World Lacrosse Sixes is opening the door for new nations to host and compete, and this event will not only help fast-track development, but will spread even more passion for lacrosse in this country and beyond."

World Lacrosse was last year granted full recognition by the International Olympic Committee, a boost for the sport’s hopes of inclusion in the Olympic programme.

World Lacrosse Sixes was formally introduced in May 2021, with the targets of supporting and encouraging the sport’s continued growth worldwide and providing greater access to the sport.
