Declan Farmer snapped a United States Paralympic record as he led his nation to a rampant victory against rivals Canada in the opening preliminary round ice hockey match of Beijing 2022.

Farmer was instrumental in the US leading 2-0 after the first period, where he assisted Josh Pauls and Brody Roybal.

Malik Jones made it 3-0 before Farmer provided another assist - this time to Joshua Misiewicz - to put the US into a dominating 4-0 lead.

The 24-year-old created history in the third period with a goal of his own, making him the all-time US point leader at the Winter Paralympics.

Farmer’s influential performance led to players on either team praising him.

"He is an excellent player," Canada’s Tyler McGregor said after the game.

"He has shown it for many years now.

"He has a high hockey IQ and always seems to be around the net.

"He is a guy that we have to target and shut him down (but) we were not able to do that today."

The US’ David Hoff added: "He doesn't have to say a lot, he can just do it and the rest of us just jump in behind and follow on.

"He's so important to us in that way."

In Group B, China’s Yifeng Shen scored four goals in a 7-0 rout against Slovakia.

Anticipation was high before the match as both teams were making their Paralympic debuts.

However, the hosts quickly imposed themselves on a Slovakian team that struggled to get going.

Shen opened the scoring with a brace in the first period while Yutao Cui added a third in the second period.

There was a brief altercation later in the second period where Slovakia’s Martin Joppa and China’s Guangjian received a two minute penalty for teeing, and Hongguan Li was hit with a two minute penalty for interference on Slovakian goalkeeper Eduard Lepacek.

In the final period, China turned their proud win into a humiliating loss for Slovakia.

Shen secured his hattrick soon after the break before Li put China 5-0 up.

Shen then extended China's lead further, and Tian rounded off the emphatic debut.

Meanwhile, the other Group B fixture saw the Czech Republic mimic the Americans, defeating Italy 5-0.

Czech captain Pavel Kubeš put his side in front and Radek Zelinka quickly followed to double the scoreline.

Under a minute into the second period, David Palat made it 3-0 and Vaclav Hecko soon added a fourth.

Michal Geier completed the dominating win in the third period.

Much like Canada versus the US and Slovakia against China, Italy struggled to create chances and could not cope with their opponents imposing display.

South Korea, competing in Group A, did not play today following the International Paralympic Committee’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing at the Games in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The International Olympic Committee recommended for sporting organisations to prohibit athletes and officials from Russia and Belarus from all international sporting competitions on Monday (February 28).

The Russian Paralympic Committee called the decision "politicised", claiming it would "lead to the degradation and collapse of the entire world of sports."
