Japan’s Hinako Shibuno has taken a one-shot lead following the second round of the Chevron Championship in Rancho Mirage in California.

This leaves open the possibility of the 23-year-old adding to her 2019 Women’s British Open title, which is currently her only Ladies Professional Golf Association’s (LPGA) major championship of her career.

Shibuno hit seven birdies, recorded a bogey and finished on five consecutive pars to end the day with a six-under-par 66 to place her with an overall total of nine-under 135.

Hot on her heels are the United States' duo Jennifer Kupcho and Annie Park, as well as Thailand’s title holder Patty Tavatanakit, after they all finished the second-round joint-second with a score of eight-under.

Kupcho, who shared the lead after the first round with Australian world number four Minjee Lee, shot 70 while Park hit 67 and Tavatanakit recorded 69 at the Mission Hills Country Club’s Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Kupcho - the 2020 Colorado Women's Open winner - stayed within contention thanks to 16 straight pars and two birdies from the final three holes.

Meanwhile, Park scored four birdies in five successive holes to climb the standings and Tavatanakit recovered from three bogeys by scoring back-to-back birdies on the final holes to record six birdies for the round.

"I feel like I left a lot out there," Tavatanakit said.

"But at the same time, that's just golf.

"There is no way you're going to have a perfect day with no mistakes.

"I think 17 was definitely a bonus with that pin position.

"I think it kind of got my momentum going, knowing 18 was an up tee, so I knew I had a chance to get another birdie."

Tied for fifth at seven-under are South Koreans Kim Sei-young, the winner of the 2020 Women's Professional Golf Association Championship, and Kim Hyo-joo once they ended the round shooting 67.

Below in joint-seventh are Denmark's Nanna Koerstz Madsen - this year's Honda LPGA Thailand winner - and America’s Ally Ewing.

This is the last time the Chevron Championship will be held at Mission Hills Country Club with the competition anticipated to be moved to Houston next year.

The action will continue tomorrow for the third day of the competition.
