Spain’s Olympic medallists Sandra Sánchez and Damián Quintero were honoured in Madrid by the Spanish Olympic Committee (SOC) as well as the highest level of karate officials.

The pair are top of the World Karate Federation (WKF) rankings after making their memorable debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Sánchez, who is also a two-time world champion, claimed gold in the women’s individual kata while Quintero achieved a silver in the men’s version of the event.

Quintere is also a world champion in team kata.

The two athletes received recognition by the country’s top sporting officials including the SOC President Alejandro Blanco, Jose Manuel Franco, the President of the National Sports Council and Spanish Karate Federation President Antonio Moreno.

Quintero and Sánchez, alongside head coach Jesús Del Moral, explained during the ceremony the challenging experiences they had to go through to achieve their Olympic success.

They also referred to how they have seen a meteoric rise in their popularity since being awarded with the medals.

They praised family, friends, media, sports officials, partners and sponsors for their support during their journey and that they hope karate will return to the Olympic programme soon.

Karate made its first appearance at the Olympics in Japan but it was replaced by breakdancing for Paris 2024.

WKF President Antonio Espinós and WKF Senior Advisor Francisco Alegrete also participated in the event to honour the Spaniards.

"Sandra Sanchez and Damian Quintero represent the best of our Karate Values," Espinós said.

"Not only they are hard-working, committed, and courageous athletes; they are extraordinary human beings who best personify our ideals of honour, perseverance, and determination to overcome the hardest adversities.

"It is a source of pride to see how our Olympians are recognised at their home countries.

"I want to thank the Royal Spanish Karate Federation and its president Antonio Moreno for putting this emotive event together."
