Akzhol Makhmudov claimed his second continental title to put Kyrgyzstan top of the medals table after day one of the Asian Wresting Championships in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.

Makhmudov’s triumph in the men's Greco-Roman under-77 kilograms division went alongside compatriot Tynar Sharshenbekov's success in the under-63kg class.

Makhmudov, a Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, was made to work hard for his second Asian crown by Maxat Yerezhepov of Kazakhstan in the final.

Yerezhepov scored an early point to take the lead before Makhmudov put three unanswered points on the board to win the gold medal.

Iran’s Aref Habibollahi claimed a bronze by walkover against South Korea’s Kim Hyeon-woo and Japan’s Kodai Sakuraba took down India’s Sajan Bhanwala 11-1.

Sharshenbekov also beat opposition from Kazakhstan in the final, earning a dominant victory versus two-time World Championship medallist Mirambek Ainagulov.

After the Kyrgyzstani entered the second round with a one-point lead, Sharshenbekov scored an additional four via a fall to secure the gold medal.

Neeraj of India beat Uzbekistan’s three-time Asian medallist Islomjon Bakhramov 7-4 to claim a bronze medal while Iran’s Iman Mohammadi took the other following a forfeit from Syria's Ahmad Al Nakdali.

A brutal display from over-130kg wrester Alimkhan Syzdykov against South Korea’s Kim Min-seok gave Kazakhstan a gold medal.

Roman Kim secured Kyrgyzstan's sole bronze medal of the day and Uzbekistan's Muminjon Abdullaev picked up the other bronze.

Kim won by walkover against Arata Sonoda of Japan and Abdullaev triumphed via fall versus Singapore’s Timothy Loh.

Iran are positioned third in the medal standings due to Naser Alizadeh defeating Uzbekistan's Jalgasbay Berdimuratov 3-1 in the under-87kg final.

There were clear-cut victories in the bronze-medal matches, with India’s Sunil Kumar cruising 9-1 past Mongolia’s Batbayar Lutbayar and Kazakhstan’s Nursultan Tursynov dominating Kyrgyzstan’s Melis Aitbekov 7-2.

Japan’s Yu Shiotani's victory at under-55kg completed the first day's set of finals.

He beat Amangali Bekbolatov of Kazakhstan 13-2.

Arjun Halakurki of India and Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Ortikboev achieved the bronzes in the category.

The Indian fought off Mongolia’s Davaabandi Munkh Erdene 10-7 while Ortikboev controlled his encounter versus South Korea's Jeon Hyeok-jin to win 8-0.

The Asian Wrestling Championships is due to continue tomorrow with the second batch of Greco-Roman tournaments.
