Italy's Tommaso Marini was the star of the show at the International Fencing Federation (FIE) Foil World Cup in Belgrade as he secured men's individual and team gold medals while Germany's Anne Sauer was the women's individual champion and France took the team title.

Marini faced his compatriot Giorgio Avola in the men's individual final and eventually pulled off a routine 15-9 victory to record the first World Cup gold of his career.

Avola beat Japan's Kazuki Iimura 15-9 in the semi-finals while Marini dispatched The Netherlands' Daniel Giacon with another 15-9 scoreline.

Avola defeated Hong Kong's Tokyo 2020 champion Cheung Ka Long 15-7 in the quarter-finals en route to his silver medal at the Belexpocentar in the Serbian capital.

In the women's individual foil, Sauer also faced a team-mate in the final in Leonie Ebert.

The 10-time German champion Sauer won by a single touch to take a narrow 15-14 victory after defeating Italy's Martina Batini 15-7 and the United States' Olympic champion Lee Kiefer 15-10 in the previous rounds.

Ebert also had a difficult route to the deciding duel, as she downed Italian world champion Alice Volpi 15-13 and fellow German and double world champion Arianna Errigo 15-12.

There were 28 teams competing in the men's team tournament, with Italy cruising past Poland 45-27 in the final.

Hong Kong and France lost out in the semi-finals but the bronze went to the latter as they won 45-38 in the third place playoff.

France then ended on top in the women's team competition which saw 20 teams take part.

Anita Blaze, Pauline Ranvier and Ysaora Thibus remained in the line-up after taking silver in the Tokyo 2020 women's team foil event while Solene Butruille came in for Astrid Guyart.

The quartet got the better of Germany 45-30 in the final after scraping a 45-44 win against France in the semi-final while Germany beat Japan 39-34 to advance to the decider.

The bronze medal then went to Italy with a resounding 45-15 win against Japan.
