Matilde Vitillo of Italy has secured her first International Cycling Union (UCI) Women’s WorldTour triumph on stage two of the Vuelta a Burgos Féminas in Spain.

The BePInk rider was one of seven cyclist who made a break of seven seconds from the rest of the pack in the final sprint of the race.

Vitillo came out victorious in 3 hours 17 mins 58 secs after fighting hard against second-place Nina Buijsman of the Netherlands.

They both made one last burst with 250 metres to go but the Dutch cyclist was unable to catch her opponent.

Lara Vieceli ensured Italy took two podium positions by taking third.

"This is a surprise, definitely a surprise," Vitillo remarked.

"I went in the breakaway to show myself on TV, but I certainly didn’t expect to win the stage."

Czech Republic's Aranza Villalón followed the top three immediately while Slovakia’s Nora Jenčušová, Colombia’s Jennifer Tatiana Ducuara and The Netherlands' Maaike Coljé ended the race a single second behind the winner.

Italy’s Marta Cavalli, the winner of the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands and La Flèche Wallonne Féminine in Belgium, suffered a crash during the race and was taken to hospital for medical checks after being forced to abandon her cycle.

Dacuara’s sixth-place finish means she has risen to the top of the overall standings having taken a six second lead over several riders, including stage one winner Lotte Kopecky of Belgium.

Emma Norsgaard of Denmark is still leading the youth standings.

Riders are anticipated to return to their bikes tomorrow for the third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Féminas, where they are set to travel from Medina de Pomar to Ojo Guareña in the north of Spain.
