Timothy Sherry of the United States topped the 50 metres rifle three positions men's qualifying at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Grand Prix in Granada.

The 27-year-old Pan American Games individual champion scored a total of 581 to go into tomorrow’s final stage as favourite.

Norway's Ole Martin Halvorsen was the second-best qualifier, also on 581.

Third, on 580, was France’s Alexis Raynaud, but he is not eligible for entry into the final and thus scores ranking points only.

Canada’s Grzegorz Sych, Ivan Roe of the US and Norway’s Jon-Hermann Hegg were the next best, all on 579.

Qualification in the Spanish venue also took place in the women’s 25m pistol competition, where Poland’s Katarzyna Klepacz finished six shots clear on 295.

Home shooter Maria Soto scored 289, and Portugal’s Joana Castelao and Lana Kim of South Korea amassed 288.

The previous day Klepacz was part of the Polish trio that won air pistol team gold, accompanied by Natalia Krol and Wioletta Pawluczek, who defeated Italy 16-14.

The air pistol team men's gold went to Sweden’s Morgan Johansson, Isac Ahlqvist and Per-Anders Lander, who earned a 16-10 win over the home trio of Martin Freije Torneiro, Gustavo Alba Medina and Rafael Sanchez.

Georgia beat Britain 16-6 in the bronze-medal match.

Competition continues tomorrow with the final stages of the men's 50m rifle three positions and the women's 25m pistol event, while men's and women's skeet qualifying will also be held.

The Grand Prix is due to finish on Sunday (May 29).
