France's Jean-Baptiste Bernaz topped qualifying at the International Laser Class Association 7 Men's World Championship after another consistent day of sailing at Riviera Nayarit in Mexico.

Four-time Olympian Bernaz finished second in both yellow fleet races on the third day of competition, ensuring he finished with 12 points.

Bernaz endured a difficult opening race on Monday (May 23) as he placed 19th, but that result serves as his discard.

He went on to secure three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes to clinch his place in the gold fleet for the final series as the top qualifier.

Jonatán Vadnai of Hungary was third-best overall with 18 points.

He won the fifth race in the yellow fleet, and finished sixth in the final race of qualifying.

The sixth race in the yellow fleet was won by Cypriot Pavlos Kontides, an Olympic silver medallist at London 2012.

Kontides placed fifth overall with 20 points, having finished third in the first race of the third day.

In the blue fleet, Britain's Elliot Hanson triumphed in the first race of the day, making it back-to-back victories following on from yesterday.

A third-place finish in the sixth and final race of qualifying ensured Hanson was the second-best qualifier on 15 points.

His compatriot Daniel Whiteley was fourth in both races on the final day of qualifying, finishing on 19 points.

Portugal's Eduardo Marques, 12th overall, was the winner of the sixth race in the blue fleet.

Reigning world champion Thomas Saunders of New Zealand in the yellow fleet finished 14th overall on 43 points, although finished strongly with a fourth-place finish in the final race.

The Final Series is due to begin tomorrow, with the top half of the 126 athletes competing in the gold fleet.

A maximum of six races are due to be held over three days until Saturday (May 28).
