Australia forced the World Rugby Sevens Series title to go down to the final leg in Los Angeles following their first gold medal of the season in London.

It was a historic day for the Australians as a hattrick from Henry Patterson handed them their first cup final win over Oceania rivals New Zealand in 20 years after running out 19-14 victors at Twickenham.

Following Paterson’s first half try, New Zealand rallied through Akuila Rokolisoa and Leroy Carter to flip the result.

The All Black Sevens could not handle Peterson on either end of the field with the Australian scoring his second try of the match as well as making a try-saving tackle in the final moments of regulation to send the match into extra time.

Peterson then rounded off his spectacular performance by scoring the golden point try.

Australia’s important title win takes them to an overall score of 122, which is just two points below South Africa.

Significantly, the Blitzboks were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Australia.

After South Africa stormed into a 17-0 lead, Australia fought back thanks to tries from Ben Dowling and Paterson, a hattrick of conversions from Dietrich Roache and a late penalty from captain Nick Malouf.

The match finished 21-17.

South Africa’s Muller Du Plessis was stretchered off with a head injury during the match but the national team has since confirmed that the player is "fine."

South Africa ensured they have a two-point lead over Australia in the overall standings by securing a fifth-place finish against Ireland, who they beat 14-5.

Fiji walked away with bronze following a 31-26 win over Samoa.

Napolioni Bolaca was Fiji’s standout performer after he scored two of his team’s five tries and kicked two out of three conversions.

The final leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series is scheduled to be held between August 27 and 28 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Los Angeles.
