The Multi European Taekwondo Games passed the halfway stage, with Turkey claiming three of the gold medals on offer on the fourth day of competition in Sofia.

Yusuf Badem triumphed in the men's under-51 kilograms category at the Exhibition Forum Events Hall in Hotel Marinela, beating France's Amine Boukarnia in the final.

The two bronze medals went to Ukraine's Simur Mirzoiev and Spain's Iván Escolar Parra as losing semi-finalists.

Hayrunisa Gürbüz came out on top in the women's under-42kg final against Sofía García Marquina of Spain, with Germany's Johanna Rommel and Greece's Melina Georgiou having to settle for bronze.

Rüya Diler was the other Turkish winner of the day in the women's under-52kg, overcoming Bulgarian home favourite Aleksandra Georgieva.

Elifsu Gencyilmaz doubled the Turkish presence on the podium, with France's Sarah Seglar the other bronze medallist.

Spain were the top performers yesterday in Sofia, and enjoyed further success with two victories in the women's events courtesy of Ana López Izquierdo and Jada Van Wijngaarden.


López Izquierdo beat Portugal's Kiara Aldina Pinto Barroso in the under-44kg final, while Van Wijngaarden triumphed over Petra Ćirović of Serbia at under-55kg.

France also added two gold medals to their haul at the Games.

Maysane Kamkasoumphou saw off Turkey's Aleyna Şenyurt in the women's under-49kg final, while Mathis Alesio-Capolini won the men's under-48kg final against Bulgaria's Hristiyan Georgiev.

Maksym Manenkov secured victory for Ukraine in the men's under-45kg final, defeating Moldova's Igor Tabacari.

Albania's Ernest Merdanaj overcame Rynald Saal of France in the men's under-55kg final, and Denmark's Carot Christophersen was the day's other winner in the women's under-46kg, with Turkey's Serya Naz Özdemir having to settle for silver.

The Games are set to run until Wednesday (June 8)
