Canada and Costa Rica have qualified for the 2023 World Cup after confirming knockout spots at the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) W Championship in Mexico.

Canada downed Panama 1-0 at the Estadio Universitario in San Nicolás de los Garza to confirm their place at their eighth World Cup, set to take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20 next year.

Following a goalless first half, Julia Grosso broke the deadlock after 64 minutes to score for the third time at this year's Championship.

The 21-year-old netted two, her first international goals, on Tuesday (July 5) in a 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

On Monday (July 11), Canada are set to face Costa Rica to determine who will claim top spot in group B.

"I think that’s the CONCACAF experience," said Canada head coach Bev Priestman.

She spoke in reference to Panama’s frequent injury stoppages, calling it time-wasting tactics, and said that they did work.

Priestman said that the team’s standards dropped due to frustration, and added that her own frustration probably fed into the team before they were able to discuss things at halftime.

"We felt unlike Canada without the ball as well," she said.

"It’s about ball speed, tempo, intent, forward runs.

"When we do all of that, that’s when we put the ball in the back of the net."

Earlier in the day, Costa Rica coasted past Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 also at the Estadio Universitario.

A Cristin Granadas double and an own goal from Lauryn Hutchinson meant that Las Ticas went into the break with a healthy 3-0 advantage.

Katherine Alvarado then found the net after 48 minutes to complete the rout.

The tournament is taking a short break before the pool stage is set to conclude on Monday as Jamaica and Haiti, and the United States and Mexico meet in group A.

Canada and Costa Rica are then also set to meet in group B.
