The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) President Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria has travelled to Bangkok to discuss a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT).

The two National Olympic Committees (NOCs) jointly celebrated Olympic Day earlier this year, with Norza Zakaria travelling to Thailand on May 28 and International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul of Thailand attending Malaysia's events virtually on June 23.

Norza Zakaria and Leeswadtrakul discussed the future signing of a MoU to formalise mutual cooperation on events and programmes.

The OCM President welcomed the latest step in strengthening the NOCs' relationship.

"We are finalising the MoU between the OCM and the NOC Thailand and I am looking forward to seeking an appointment to sign the MoU with H.E. General Prawit Wongsuwan, deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, who is the President of NOC Thailand," Norza Zakaria said.

Khunying, who is also vice-president of the NOCT, added that both nations were also seeking to reinforce their ties in badminton.

"On behalf of the Badminton Association of Thailand, under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, we are also prepared to sign the MoU with the Badminton Association of Malaysia and to work together for the development of badminton in both countries," she said.

Thailand sent 41 athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and won one gold and one bronze medal, while Malaysia claimed one silver and one bronze.

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik were among their 30 athletes, and took bronze in the men's doubles badminton event.
