Taishu Sato topped men's qualification at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Championships in Alexandria.

The Japanese athlete finished with 1,182 points - two more than second-placed Giuseppe Mattia Parisi from Italy.

All three Tokyo 2020 Olympic medallists are among the 36 competitors through to the semi-finals.

Reigning Olympic champion Joe Choong from Britain tallied 1,178, as did Olympic runner-up Ahmed Elgendy of host nation Egypt.

South Korea's Jun Woong-tae - already a men's relay gold medallist in Alexandria this week and the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist - scored 1,167.

Jun's relay-winning team-mate Jung Jin-hwa - the 2017 world champion - made it through on 1,177.

Valentin Belaud, another former world champion, and French team-mate Valentin Prades also advanced.

Women's qualification is on the schedule tomorrow, as well as the men's semi-finals' fencing round.
