Scotland will have two flagbearers at the Commonwealth Game Opening Ceremony for the first time in the event’s history at the Alexander Stadium tomorrow, with Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018 medallist Kirsty Gilmour and Paralympic bronze medallist Micky Yule doing the honours.

Gilmour, who will competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games badminton event, and Yule, who is taking part in his third Commonwealth Para-powerlifting event, have been selected by their fellow team members.

Gilmour became the youngest badminton player to attend a Commonwealth Games for Scotland when she competed at Delhi 2010 having just turned 17.

At Glasgow 2014, she became the first Scottish woman to reach a Commonwealth Games badminton singles final, winning silver, and Gold Coast 2018 saw her return to the podium with a second successive singles medal, this time a bronze.

A double Olympian - at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games - Gilmour has also won two silvers and a bronze at the European Championships.

Yule was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) whilst serving with the British Army in Afghanistan in 2010 and required more than 40 operations, being left as a double amputee.

Having competed in Power-lifting competitions for the army since 2007, he took a year to recover before getting back into the gym in 2011 and competing for Great Britain in Para-powerlifting competitions.

At the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Yule become the first Scottish athlete to compete in Para-powerlifting, finishing fourth.

He returned for Gold Coast 2018, finishing in the same position.

"We are really proud of all of they have achieved and to be selected by their fellow athletes is recognition of how highly regarded they are within Scottish sport."

Maree Todd, Minister for Public Health, Women’s Health and Sport, commented: "I am delighted that Kirsty and Micky will lead the team into the Opening Ceremony as flag bearers.
