Italy's Alice Pagliarini and Zalán Deák of Hungary powered to their first European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) gold medals as they were victorious in the respective girls' and boys' 100 metres races in Banská Bystrica.

Pagliarini recovered from last month's loss in the Italian Under-18 National Championships to cross the finish line in first place after 11.69 seconds with a blistering performance from the fourth lane at the Národný Atletický Štadión in the Slovakian city.

She was just 0.05sec away from setting a new personal best.

Pagliarini was followed by second place Vita Penezić of Croatia, who set a new individual record with an 11.81-second run.

It was her third personal best in as many races to snatch silver ahead of the Czech Republic's Ester Parohová, who registered a time of 11.87.

Deák led a boys' field which included three personal bests and two individual records equalled.

The Hungarian clocked in after 10.62 to beat his previous fastest time by 0.03sec as he pipped Ylann Bizasene to the line.

It was the fourth time that Deák set an individual record in the past two months.

The 16-year-old finished eighth at the European Athletics Under-18 Championships in Israel and won gold at the Hungarian Under-18 Championships where he bettered himself twice.

Frenchman Bizasene equalled his personal best of 10.72 from the Franconville International Under-18 Meeting last month to secure the silver medal in front of an excitable crowd.

Daniel Pacheco Casado of Spain clinched the final podium place as he finished in 10.77, also matching his individual record.

Estonian Andreas Kase narrowly missed out on a medal as he was 0.03 slower than Pacheco Casado.

Ireland's Jesse Osamudiamen Osas was the fifth fastest runner in the boys' event to set a personal best as he finished sixth in 10.86.
