There were impressive performances by Mattie Rogers and Sarah Robles of the United States and three continental records for Olympic champion Neisi Dajomes of Ecuador on the final two days of the Pan American Weightlifting Championships in Bogotá.

But nothing could stop the host nation Colombia claiming top spot in the medals table.

Victories for Andres Serna and Jhor Moreno in the men's 96 kilograms and 102kg gave Colombia a final tally of seven gold medals on total, leaving them two clear of the Americans, with Ecuador third on four.

Rogers registered a career-best in the 76kg category, totalling 15kg more than her effort at last year's Pan American Championships when she finished second to her team-mate Kate Nye, who did not compete in Bogotá.

In less than three years Rogers has competed at four different weights, ranging from 71kg to 87kg, but her 111-141-252 was better than anything she managed at a higher weight - including her sixth-place finish in the 87kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Colombians finished second and third, Hellen Escobar on 239kg and Mailyn Echeverria on 236kg.

Robles made six from six to win super-heavyweight gold with 125-154-279, only 1kg lower than her bronze-medal performance at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Second-placed Liseth Ayovi, from Ecuador, also made six from six to finish on 264kg, ahead of Crismery Santana of the Dominican Republic by 1kg.

Dajomes, who won gold at 76kg in Tokyo last year, had a sweep of continental records in winning at the new Olympic weight of 81kg.

Her 120-143-263 left her 11kg clear of Yudelina Mejia of Dominican Republic, who made six from six.

Laura Amaro, who became Brazil’s first female medallist at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships last year in the 76kg category, made a career-best 243kg in third place despite missing three of her attempts.

Both Rogers and Dajomes had bigger totals than the 87kg winner Tamara Salazar of Ecuador, whose 251kg left her 2kg ahead of the six-from-six Colombian Yeinny Geles, with Cuba’s Ayamey Medina third on 247kg.

In Serna’s victory at 96kg he made two attempts at a continental clean and jerk record of 215kg but failed both times.

His 162-200-362 left him well ahead of Brazil’s Marco Gregorio on 348kg and the Mexican Jose Lopez on 338kg.

Colombia had a one-two finish in the 102kg, in which Moreno made 168-202-370, putting him 2kg clear of Yeimar Mendoza and 18kg ahead of third-placed Luis Lamenza, from Puerto Rico.

Mexico's Raul Manriquez won the super-heavyweights with a total of 386kg, only 4kg more than Brayan Rodallegas made in winning a memorable 89kg contest earlier in the week.

Gilberto Lemus of Guatemala was second on 375kg, just ahead of two Americans.

Caine Wilkes missed his final attempt at 211kg and had to settle for fourth place, 1kg behind his team-mate Alejandro Medina who made 374kg.

The most remarkable finish of the Pan American Championships came in the men’s 109kg, where the Peruvian Hernan Viera was 15kg back in second place with two lifts remaining, while the leader Jhohan Sanguino of Venezuela had one to come.

Viera moved up 8kg to close the gap, Sanguino failed with his final attempt, and the Peruvian then put on another 8kg and made it to take the gold.

Viera finished 153-209-362, edging out Sanguino by 1kg, with Juan Colombie of Cuba third on 360kg.
