A trail centre built in partnership with the Danish Olympic Committee (DIF) has been opened as part of a project to encourage healthier lifestyles in the nation.

The centre was opened in Silkeborg after being built and financed by the DIF, Local and Infrastructure Fund and Silkeborg Municipality.

The trail centre is designed to act as a place that inspires exercise and sports, and is due to act as a base for both sports associations and those who want to exercise or do sports on their own.

Five centres are due to be constructed around the country, with the one in Silkeborg the second of these, after the first was opened in Kolding in 2021.

"Congratulations to everyone in Silkeborg," said DIF chairman Hans Natorp, speaking at a sports party, to inaugurate the Silkeborg trail centre.

"Congratulations to employees, to politicians, to sports associations and to all citizens of the municipality, who now benefit from a quite unique sports facility.

"The trail centre in Silkeborg is only the second trail centre for outdoor sports ever - not just in Denmark, but in the whole world."

Natorp said the idea for a trail centre arose following meetings among the DIF in 2016.

"We could see an increasing interest in practicing sports and exercise in nature," said Natorp.

"In line with the increasing interest, we experienced an increasing need for facilities and meeting places for both associations and the self-organised.

"I have to admit that it is a very special feeling and special joy to see how the idea from 2016 has now been realised."
