Teach First has become the headline partner of the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) tennis programme.

The announcement follows news earlier this month that BT Group had been named headline partner of the BUCS basketball programme.

The partnerships are designed to help BUCS increase the profile of the initiative as well as promoting BT and Teach First.

BUCS' tennis programme involves 4,000 players from 90 institutions competing every Wednesday with the hope of booking a place at the showcase event of the season, BUCS Big Wednesday.

Having previously engaged with student-athletes at the 2021 BUCS Sporting Leaders Festival and 2022 BUCS Nationals, Teach First will turn its attention to promoting its training programme to athletes who take to the court at universities throughout Britain.

The programme offers graduates a unique opportunity to develop their skills across a paid, two-year teacher training and leadership programme, and gain a qualification recognised internationally while doing it.

A number of players who have taken part in the BUCS tennis programme have subsequently turned professional, notably Joe Salisbury, who won gold at the FISU World University Games while competing for GB Students.

Since turning professional, in partnership with American Rajeev Ran, Salisbury has earned three Grand Slam doubles titles, winning at the 2020 Australian Open and the 2021 and 2022 US Opens.

Meanwhile Team Bath's Alicia Barnett and Loughborough University's Olivia Nicholls are currently Britain's respective first- and second-ranked women's doubles players.

Andy Gilvary, BUCS head of competitions and performance said: "We are delighted that Teach First will become the headline partners of the BUCS Tennis Programme, which continues to go from strength to strength.

"Their support will not only increase the exposure of the programme but also provide a valuable graduate pathway to student athletes.

"As an existing partner, our athletes have already seen the value that Teach First provides, through numerous activations across Sheffield during BUCS Nationals 2022 and the Sporting Leaders Festival, and we look forward to developing that affinity during the coming year."

Matthew Williamson, Teach First's head of university recruitment, added: "We’re thrilled to be working with BUCS again, and to become headline partners of the BUCS Tennis Programme.

"Seeing the commitment, passion and energy from BUCS athletes during the last year has only proven what we already suspected - that the skills developed through playing sport are transferable to an incredible career in the classroom."
