Jinyao Liu came from behind to win the all-Chinese final of the men's 10 metres air pistol event at the World Shooting Championships in Cairo, beating Yifan Zhang 17-15.

In so doing Liu earned one of four Paris 2024 quota spots on offer at the flagship International Shooting Sport Federation event in the Egyptian capital.

Only one quota spot could go to each National Olympic Committee (NOC), and Liu secured China’s in a competition in which two other compatriots finished in the top six.

For much of the final it looked as if Zhang would claim that honour as he built up a 10-2 lead, and then a 15-9 margin, only for Liu to recover and pass him.

A concluding effort of 10.8 was enough to make certain of gold as Zhang could only manage 10.3.

Ukraine's Pavlo Korostylov won the bronze medal from Lee Wonho of South Korea in fourth place as they both earned Olympic quotas for their NOCs.

Zhang Bowen of China finished fifth, with the sixth-placed Pakistan competitor Gulfam Joseph claiming the remaining quota.

China also triumphed later in the day in the women's 10m air pistol event, where Lu Kaiman earned a quota place after beating Anna Korakaki of Greece, the Rio 2016 champion, 16-10.

Lu had reached the final by the narrowest of margins, 0.1 points, thanks to a 10.6 final shot against 35-year-old Zorana Arunovic of Serbia in the ranking match and went into the final 1.6 points behind Korakaki.

Arunovic earned a Paris 2024 quota for her country, as did fifth-placed Armenian finisher Elmira Karapetyan.
