The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced equal pay for the men's and women's national cricket teams.

BCCI members passed the resolution unanimously at the 15th Apex Council meeting held online.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to Twitter to confirm the development.

"We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted BCCI women cricketers," Shah wrote.

"The match fee for both men and women cricketers will be the same as we move into a new era of gender equality in Indian cricket.

"The BCCI women cricketers will be paid the same match fee as their male counterparts. Pay equity was my commitment to our women cricketers and I thank the Apex Council for their support."

The announcement will see women cricketers in India earn INR 1,500,000 (£15,724/€18229) for Tests, 600,000 (£6,289/€7296) for one-day internationals (ODIs) and 300,000 (£3,145/€3648) for T20 internationals.

This is a big change compared to the current pay scale where women cricketers earn INR 400,000 (£4,188/€4857) for Tests and INR 100,000 (£1,047/€1214) for T20s and ODIs.

However, there was no update on changes to the contract system in place.

Under the current contract, women cricketers in the highest bracket earn INR 50,00,000 (£52,365/€60,684), followed by INR 30,00,000 (£31,421/€36,400) and INR 10,00,000 (£10,474/€12,133) for Grade B and Grade C players respectively.

The equal pay announcement is a welcome addition after BCCI announced a potential women's Indian Premier League (IPL) next year.

New Zealand Cricket had signed a five-year deal earlier this year which will see male and female cricketers get equal pay.
