Nick Allen, who played for Canada's rugby sevens team at Birmingham 2022, was hospitalised in Indonesia with a traumatic brain injury after a scooter crash last week in Bali, Rugby Canada has said.

Allen, 26, who played in all three of Canada's group matches in the Commonwealth Games, scoring one try, was hurt on November 7, Rugby Canada said on Instagram.

Emergency surgery was required after Allen - a 6ft 4in back-row forward from West Vancouver in British Columbia - suffered severe injuries to his head, shoulder and forearm.

The process of Allen "being woken" from a medically-induced coma had started, according to the post.

The player’s father, Michael Allen, told CTV News that his son is in for a long and hard recovery.

"Nick was on a scooter and he hit a car," Michael said in an interview.

"He was over there with his friend Jake, just going on a little break.

"They were headed there to watch some rugby and just stopped off in Bali."

Michael said his son "is a fighter" and that his friends and family are devoted to his recovery.

Allen studied economics at the University of British Columbia before obtaining a law degree.

A GoFundMe page set up by friends and family to pay for Allen's medical bills had raised CAD271,431 (£171,000/$202,000/€196,000) of its CAD550,000 (£316,000/$373,000/€361,000) goal at the time of writing.
