Gumel has served two tenures as President, from 2002 until 2010 and then 2014 until present, and is on the ballot again.

However, United Sports Stakeholders has pleaded for him to allow a "younger, vibrant, and dynamic" candidate to take over the Presidency.

"Following several media channels report that the incumbent President of the NOC, Habu Ahmed Gumel, is seeking re-election into the same office for the fifth time," read a statement from United Sports Stakeholders spokesperson Sylvanus Ofekun, as reported by Blueprint.

"This is to say the least, despicable.

"His complacency and reprehensible laxity laced with his lack of transparency are some of the attributes he has displayed since his first election as President of the NOC, which have grounded sports in Nigeria.

"For instance, in the last 16 years of presiding over the NOC, no visible improvement has been recorded nor a clear-cut direction offered to the NOC."

Gumel, who was made an International Olympic Committee member in 2009, has been blamed by some for declining fortunes of the NOC.

In 2009, Gumel was challenged for the Presidency by then-Sports Minister Sani Ndanusa.

However, an NOC screening committee disqualified Ndanusa on the basis that documents he had submitted were allegedly "forged, altered and not dated."

Ndanusa responded by suspending Gumel from his post as President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and setting up an inquiry into the allegations.

The Presidential vote is set to take place at the organisation's Congress in Jalingo on December 15.

"Since he is no longer relevant at the international level, couple with the fact that NOC has failed in its responsibilities under Gumel's Presidency, we therefore appeal that he rests his ambition for younger, vibrant, dynamic and result oriented individuals to via for the office of the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and bring a breathe of fresh air into that office," the statement continued.
