New Zealand have named double Commonwealth Games weightlifting gold medallist Nigel Avery as Chef de Mission for Paris 2024.

Avery, who competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, was in charge at Birmingham 2022 where New Zealand won 49 medals, including 20 gold in what was their best Commonwealth Games performance away from home.

"Birmingham was a fantastic experience and I was really proud of the team's performances on and off the field of play," Avery said.

"I'm now looking forward to creating a supportive environment for our Summer Olympic team, and ensuring our athletes have everything they need to meet their goals in Paris in just over a year and a half."

Avery also called for New Zealand fans to enter the global ballot for tickets to support the team.

"Paris is going to be an amazing Games and we’d love a big contingent of New Zealanders to be there cheering on the team.

"We’re also expecting fantastic competition at iconic venues and we know our team will be giving everything to make New Zealand proud and add another chapter to our sporting history."

He is to lead a team of around 200 competitors in Paris and expects the Opening Ceremony held on the river Seine to be a highlight of the Games.

"The Paris Organising Committee has some pretty amazing plans in the pipeline."

The Paris Olympics are set to open on July 26 2024.
