The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has fined the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) €20,000 (£17,255/$21,048) "for the violation of the basic rules of decent conduct".

A video was circulated on social media platforms that saw Irish women's team players singing "up the Ra" during the post-match celebrations in the dressing room at Hampden Park, where they had beaten Scotland 1-0.

Amber Barrett scored the only goal of the game, helping the Irish women’s national team qualify for their first-ever World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.

This was in reference to the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a name used by several paramilitary organisations opposing British rule on the island of Ireland, most notably the Provisional IRA which was active during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

"Following an investigation conducted by a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector regarding the potential inappropriate behaviour by players of the Republic of Ireland Women’s team in the aftermath of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifiers play-off second leg match played against Scotland on 11 October 2022, and the subsequent disciplinary proceedings opened against the Football Association of Ireland, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has taken the following decision: - To fine the Football Association of Ireland €20,000 for the violation of the basic rules of decent conduct," UEFA said in a statement.

The FAI and the team's Dutch manager Vera Pauw apologised soon after the incident, saying there was no excuse for the behaviour of the players.

According to the Birmingham Mail, families of the victims of the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings had criticised the players for the chant.

The Provisional IRA never accepted responsibility for the bombings.

Four Irish nationals - Louise Quinn, Jamie Finn, Harriet Scott and Lucy Quinn - play for Birmingham City Women Football Club.
